Choosing a construction contractor for utility and infrastructure work
What to actually check when you are picking a construction contractor for UK utility and infrastructure delivery.
The pitch deck almost never tells you the truth
Most contractors look similar on paper. The differences only show up under load: how thin the labour bench really is, whether the work gets sub-let, and how the supervision behaves at 6pm on a wet Friday.
Pick on the deck and you will find out the hard way.
Ask the questions that actually matter
A serious utility contractor should be able to talk you through their own bench, their own academy, their own SHEQ behaviours and their own client references on the asset you are about to put them on.
JJU does, because we run all of it ourselves rather than brokering it.
Questions worth asking
How much of the work do you self-deliver?
How big is your directly managed operative bench?
How do you handle compliance and ticket renewal?
What is your SHEQ track record on this asset type?
Can I speak to your last three utility clients?
What you get when you pick well
Programme dates that hold under pressure
Single point of accountability
Cleaner SHEQ and audit record
Lower commercial risk on framework work
A contractor your asset owner will respect
